When Hurricane Irma hit St. Thomas in mid-September, residents Remo, Romulo, Omar, Rose and Freddie moved to the Marine Gardens at Coral World Ocean Park for safety. When Maria blew in two weeks later, they hunkered down inside the Dolphin Education Center; the previous shelter no longer afforded them protection. The islanders shared the space with several staff members, together braving the battering winds and deluge of rain. Several days after the second storm, the sea lions returned home, slipping back into waters now calm after the fury.

The one-two-three punch of hurricanes Irma, Jose and Maria knocked the wind out of the Caribbean, the Florida Keys and the Outer Banks. Some of the areas are still out of commission, but many are shoveling the sand off the welcome mat and are ready for visitors. Here is an update of the affected areas, based on dispatches from the Caribbean Tourism Organization, local tourism offices and hotels. Before departing for any of these destinations, remember to check with the airline, property and attractions for the most recent status report.

We had one purpose in booking our vacation here at Sand Castle on the Beach: to relax in a safe, inclusive place. Mission accomplished. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and valued. After settling in, we took immediate advantage of the beach, located on the property. There were plenty of lounge chairs available, some next to umbrellas for shade, others in full sun. The water was warm and inviting with gentle waves. Rock formations and mini reefs in even the shallowest parts of the ocean made for fun and easy snorkeling; because the waves are gentle here on the west end if the island, the water remains clear, making for great views of fish other sea life. The pool, located on the tile deck overlooking the ocean toward the west (Ah! Sunsets!) was clean and inviting. It’s a small pool as resorts go, just right for leaning back and chilling out.

My partner and I selected Sand Castle On The Beach based on TripAdvisor reviews and for its location. Most people stay at the other end of the island because Christiansted provide a fascinating place where the action is located. We wanted the dramatic sunsets and the most beautiful beaches, which are located on the west coast, near Frederiksted. We found exactly what we expected, and even more, from this well-maintained boutique hotel. We stayed in their Sea View Suite – a one bedroom apartment with a full kitchenette, living room and separate bedroom and a balcony overlooking the lush gardens, pool and the ocean. Falling asleep listening to the sound of the ocean was a dream. The suite was clean, air-conditioned and comfortable. The appliances in the kitchen were a bit out of date, but they worked and are very clean. Hot water was intermittent during the showers. Luckily, the cold water was as nice as the pool, not frozen, so it was not a big deal.

This was a great hotel, from the moment we arrived until the time we left. The owner helped carry our bags to our room, and it was a very nice greeting from the front desk staff. While the room was a little small, it was great to have an outdoor patio with a table and some chairs for us to relax outside. The Restaurant was great, we ate there several times on our trip, with good food and friendly bar and wait staff. It’s a great place to come and relax and enjoy the beach and the ocean, and to admire the beautiful sunsets on the West end of St. Croix.

We decided to spend the day at Sand Castle during our cruise stop in St. Croix. We booked a pass before our cruise- $ 5 per person, which had an easy chair. We were very impressed with this hotel. Nice pool and beach restaurant. The beach was very nice. The water was transparent with a lot of sea glass to be found. We loved this day because it was not crowded and we did not have people on the beach harassing us to buy things. My daughter wanted to add the free wi-fi connection was perfect! I highly recommend it by coming here.

The view from our breakfast table was stunning. We were on the leeward side of the island so the highest wave we saw the entire time we were there was about an inch or so. Great for diving and snorkeling! Not so much for surfing 🙂 We also saw some fantastic sunsets since it is also the west side. I’m sure we missed some nice sunrises, but we were never up early enough to enjoy them anyway.

Rainbow gets too crazy on a ship day, jetskis and loud music are not my cup of tea. Sandcastle is a bit expensive for food, otherwise it’s perfect. Very relaxing and peaceful with beautiful views and great snorkeling.

The three-pearl Sand Castle on the Beach hotel is a lovely boutique alternative to the big resorts on the eastern side of St. Croix. The delicious restaurant, stunning beach, and easygoing vibe make this a pleasant choice for families and travelers looking for an affordable beach vacation. Our Cruise began in San Juan with St. Croix as the first scheduled cruise port. I’d never been to St. Croix so I did my research and discovered that it had been out of favor as a cruise stop for awhile. I’m glad things turned around and we made a stop there. It’s completely lovely. Our research turned up a place called Sandcastle on the Beach which had a ‘cruiser day pass’ for $25. The fee covered 2 chairs, an umbrella, and 2 drinks – with or without rum. We communicated online with the charming Jayne and reserved our pass. Our first island day dawned bright and sunny and we headed off the ship through the pier area to waiting taxi vans. The policewoman told us where to go to catch the taxi van. The fee was $6 round-trip and the van runs every half hour all day from the hotel to the pier and back. We checked in with Jayne and settled in our chairs on the beach. The hotel property was lovely – lots of plants and hammocks for relaxing. There was a small, very clean pool ocean side and changing/bathroom facilities available to us. The beach sand was really white and clean and there was a lovely sandcastle that had been made by one of the staff. The water was beautiful shades of blue, very calm, and very clean for swimming.

Croix to install a 10 kw battery backup solar, power system and we have an ever-expanding solar, grid for both the hotel and beach side cafe. We, are proud to say that sand castle on the beach was, designed by the distinguished wisconsin born, architect, john randall mcdonald. He was a great, admirer of frank lloyd wrights* prairie school of, architecture. John randall mcdonald was considered, an organic architect for his awareness of the, elegance of the natural environment, thereby being, more sensitive to nature. He was commissioned to, design monasteries, hotels, private homes, schools, and churches. We are fortunate that he had an, office here on st. Croix for many years. He, designed homes for bjorn borg, mickey mantle,, perry como, jimmy connors and here on st. Croix,, maureen o*hara. He died in 2003. Our friendly and, courteous team make sure the hotel is as perfect, as you want it to be. Ok expert travelers, I am bumping my head against the wall sorting through the comments about beaches. We are going to dock in Frederiksted on a cruise in December and really just want a spot to spend a few hours and then maybe if there are some local eats in town to hit before we get back on ship. We will be there on a Sunday so I think that might be a factor for restaurants although I hear places open if a ship is in port.

Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort & Casino guests and staff are safe, the power never went out at the resort, but the grounds did sustain some damage from Hurricane Maria’s heavy rain and wind. Currently assessing the situation to determine next steps in the recovery process.

We were able to make all wedding arrangements directly with the owners via email and phone. Start this process early and stay relaxed—remember, this is the Caribbean. Cruzans are on “island time,” mon, so the pace is very laid back. But it’s no problem, deary, everything will turn out as fabulous as it did for us! All of our guests vowed to return and thought the service at the hotel was among the best they’ve had anywhere. The ladies at the front desk will do anything for you throughout your stay—very helpful and accommodating. They did everything from curing my swimmer’s ear (thanks, Irma) to booking reservations at the great local restaurants (for me and ,oh, 30 friends). The hotel accommodated more than 25 of us. We felt like the place was ours—we could party by the pool and self-stock bar into the night or choose to relax and retire early. Sandcastles attracts the friendliest of travelers from all walks of life—we made friends with many of the other guests. The hotel’s restaurant, Beachside Café, is absolutely top notch. The food and service are amazing.

My partner and I stayed at the Sand Castle for a long weekend at the beginning of October. This was our first visit to St Croix but our 4th to the virgin islands. The moment we checked into the hotel the first thing we did was head to Da Beach!!! We were amazed by how close the beach was to the hotel and how clear the ocean was (we could see the fish swim by). Our room was spacious with a balcony with an ocean view as well as hearing the sounds of the ocean to put us to sleep at night. The entire staff was friendly and helpful…we did not have any negative encounters with anyone. The owners Simone and Sheryl were very knowledgeable about things to do and places to go snokling, shopping and about island history. One of the waitresses (Rita) kept us in stitches during dinner…she’s so funny and awesome.The food at the restaurant was tasty (we tried something new everyday) and Scott made the best drinks. It was a very relaxing and fun atmosphere. We made a couple of friends while on vacation and we were all taking about visting again together. Overall, we will recommend this hotel to everyone and we can’t wait to visit again.

The Floris Suite Hotel & Spa in Curacao is widely considered the most LGBT-welcoming hotel in the Caribbean. By no means are these the only LGBT-welcoming hotels in the Caribbean, but we were told by most LGBT experts Travel Agent spoke to that this selection should be a solid start for agents looking to break into this market. Newly appointed Director of Marketing Canika John announced the 2016-2017 Family Reunion promotion, which includes a number of booking incentives, including $350 in spending credits for family-focused activities and a free night at participating hotels.

The United States Virgin Islands is offering a free night’s stay along with spending credits for travel to St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas from June to October this year. The USVI Department of Tourism announced its 2016 Summer-Fall Promotion, which includes a fourth night free and $350 in spending credit. Travelers must book by July 16, 2016, and all travel must be completed between June 5 and October 15, 2016.

Many travelers love to shake off the winter blues with trips to sun-splashed Caribbean islands. There’s nothing more magical than the pairing of winter festivities with tropical landscapes, but after the ravages of hurricanes Irma and Maria, which islands are equipped for visitors? Follow these guidelines to help decide your Caribbean travel plans:

This is a lovely B&B right on the beach. We enjoyed this place immensely, having never stayed in Frederiksted before. We’ve been to St. Croix many times and have stayed at the Divi and Carambola and The Waves at Cane Bay, But this trip we stayed mostly in Frederiksted, only visiting Csted once all week.

The hotel has an excellent location, only 10km from the airport and 800 metres from downtown Frederiksted. The air-conditioned hotel enjoys a special and picturesque location, and with a boutique beach style it is designed for relaxation. Hotel amenities include a library, conference facilities, bars and restaurants. There are 21 guest rooms available. The rooms are luxurious and equipped with a full kitchen and separate living room, and some are equipped with a sofa bed. Most rooms have a balcony or terrace. The rooms are en suite and furnished with either double or king-size beds. A safe, a mini fridge and tea and coffee making facilities come as standard. Guests may take a refreshing dip in the outdoor swimming pools. Diving and horse riding are also possible. A continental breakfast is served each morning at the hotel and lunch and dinner may be selected à la carte.

The hotel has an excellent location; only 7 miles from the airport and 1/2 mile from downtown Frederiksted.

Before I broke my neck, I had visited the Cayman Islands and vowed that someday I’d return to see the remaining islands of the Caribbean, the Virgin Islands and the West Indies. After I broke my neck I put my dream trip off for years, not wanting to struggle with likely wheelchair inaccessibility. Finally last year, after several friends were diagnosed with life-altering diseases, I decided it was now or never. I figuratively jumped into the blue waters with both feet.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort will not be accepting additional reservations through the end of November. The resort has relaxed its cancellation policies so guests with reservations through November can cancel or rebook for a later date without penalty.

My bf and I are planning a week in the Caribbean this fall, and he loves all-inclusives (I don’t!!). Any leads on gay-friendly all inclusive resorts? And gay-friendly islands, for that matter? Any islands to stay away from besides the obvious, like Jamaica? And best of all, can anybody really give me a foolproof argument to convince him that all-inclusives are just not for a gay couple? We wondered, though, before arriving in St. Croix in mid-December, three months after Hurricane Maria, if our home island’s beaches had rebounded as yet. Shoy’s, Sandy Point, Dorsch, Haypenny, Isaac Bay, Coakley Bay, Sprat Hall –– were they still lined with pristine white sand, or had rocks taken their place? Well…

Less than one year after the 2017 hurricanes, the U.S. Virgin Islands will host major online travel agents as the USVI Hotel & Tourism Association prepares for the 25th Annual Destination Symposium Aug. 13-17, according to a release issued Saturday. The milestone event aims to show wholesalers that the territory is poised for a successful winter tourism season.

There were celebrations and some dissension as members of St. Croix’s LGBTQ community and their supporters paraded from the Frederiksted clock tower near the pier to the Sand Castle Hotel on Saturday. (Warning: Indecent language included, viewer discretion is advised.)

ST. CROIX — The gathering was building slowly after the 9:00 a.m. hour at the clock tower in Frederiksted on Saturday. The event itself — the first ever lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (L.G.B.T.Q.) pride parade, which is held every year in countries around the world as part of pride month — was scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m., and the mostly Caucasian crowd that gathered at first, was leading some observers to believe that local L.G.B.T.Q. community members of African descent would shy away from the historic affair following a furor that raged for days on local radio shows and on social media after the parade was announced.

My youngest child, Lex, identifies as “non-binary.” This means Lex does not conform to the stereotypes of masculine or feminine, but is somewhere in between. There are words for this in the LGBTQ community; gender fluid, or pangender or other-gendered. More people are discovering that the traditional pigeonhole boxes of boy, and girl do not fit their inner sense of self.

ST. CROIX — The St. Croix Hotel and Tourism Association (STXHTA) in partnership with Cape Air hosted a travel agent reception for Puerto Rico travel agents and press, attracting over a dozen attendees from tourism and media sectors, including two of the largest wholesalers on Puerto Rico, according to a release STXHTA late Monday.

CROIX — Senator Novelle Francis, after introducing a measure aimed at controlling noise in the territory in July 2016, on Wednesday brought the measure before the Committee on Government Affairs, Veterans, Energy and Environmental Protection, where the legislation, Bill No. 32-0011, was approved and forwarded to the Committee on Rules and Judiciary for further consideration.

The Department of Tourism has launched “Centennial PLUS”, an enhanced summer and fall travel promotion to coincide with the destination’s 100thanniversary as a U.S. territory. The new, expanded package, which can be booked through participating tour operators, offers $400 in VI spending credits as well as the fourth night free for a minimum four-night stay, according to a release D.O.T. issued late Friday. The credits can be easily redeemed across the territory at restaurants, retail stores, attractions and activities.

USVI Hotel & Tourism Association President Lisa Hamilton was named Caribbean Association Executive of the Year during the June 2 opening of the third annual Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum in Miami, Florida, according to a recently issued release.

ST. CROIX — Lauded as the culmination of food and wine events on the island, the 17th Annual Taste of St Croix brought thousands to Divi Carina Bay Resort and Casino on Thursday night. The premier showcase of culinary artistry and excellence brought local restaurants—both long established and up and coming—to the forefront, allowing them an opportunity to compete, but more importantly show off their craft and achieve the overall goal of Taste. Eight Wine and Beverage vendors and fifty-two restaurants participated in the event.

Pride month on St Croix has come to an end after nearly twenty events were held in June. Some of those events met controversy, but supporters say they hope barriers were broken and minds were opened.

We arrived and right away we felt welcome Erma was awesome! We spent a week and all the staff were always friendly and remembered our names. Soul at the front desk was very knowledgeable about what to do on the island and what to ask for and I can not thank you for recommending aquaman enough for our dive adventure. The coffee in Sandcastle was excellent too. I’m not sure if there is a better view while having dinner or for coffee in the morning and do not forget if you start the habit of having continental breakfast that does not happen a day because Monica in the staff will give you Heck to not see her for the morning! LOL. Overall, it was a trip of the first and I could not be happier that Sandcastle was where we were given to rest and recuperate after each adventure on the island. Also, the snorkeling in front of Sandcastle is equally impressive. Go and enjoy! We will be back!

If you’re like us, a day—or even a few hours–at a beach really make you feel like you’re on vacation. Despite the increasing popularity of cities, towns, and even cold weather cruise ports, almost countless cruise itineraries still visit destinations focused on sun and fun. Every year, we plan a getaway to the Caribbean in the middle of the winter…we aim for February but based on our work schedules, sometimes it falls in January. Anyway, we decided to go with 3 other families this past winter (Jan 2017)! Craziness! Each of the families had a toddler each and we had a 2 year and a 7 month old. Since we hadn’t finalized the adoption of our son at that point, we had to stay in the U.S. so we decided on St. Croix. I’ve never been to any of the US Virgin Islands but in the Caribbean, you really can’t go wrong. Based on experience and from what I’ve read. Anyway, with a quick pit stop in Miami, we were off to St. Croix!

It is thanks to sugar that Europeans settled in St John. In the early 18th century the Danes arrived and started the first plantations, which in their heyday numbered 25 across the tiny island. The Annaberg Sugar Mill and its plantation offer a slice of well-preserved colonial history, as well as an insight into one of the world’s most vital crops. The mill and plantation was founded in 1718 and up until 1848 was worked by West Indian slaves (who were emancipated in that year). In addition to the hard grind of producing the sugar, rum and molasses were also made. The cane was crushed with a wind-driven (or horse, if there was no wind) mill, its juices then boiled—producing gallons of sugar per hour. Daily tours are now available at the plantation, and visitors can admire the rebuilt ruins and the fantastic views that the site affords.

There are some beautiful beach hotels around St. Croix and there are also some great hotels on the waterfront in Christiansted that, while not on a beach, are very convenient and right on the water. There’s a new Boardwalk that runs throughout Christiansted Harbor from the seaplane base at one end to the historic area run by the U.S. National Park Service at the other. Good Afternoon! As some of our readers may have noticed, we have a few stories written about the US Virgin Islands and that is for two simple reasons– the USVI is beautiful and needs to be seen by everyone! After spending four weeks on the Island of St. Croix and learning about the culture, food, relaxing, and discovering that I am allergic to fresh mangoes, I would like to share some recommendations for what to do when coming to the Island. There are so many fun adventures to be had in the US Virgin Islands; it isn’t hard to see why residents and visitors alike continue to flock to this underrated paradise.

Hurricane season 2017 in the Caribbean is one the islands would just as soon forget. Two major storms, Irma and Maria, took a massive toll on property and hotels which are a critical source of tourism revenue. If you are planning a cruise or intend to head to the sunny shores and clear blue waters of the islands, you should check ahead with the cruise lines and hotels in order to know what your options will be before you depart.

When Cottagse by the Sea fills up, please check out The Frederiksted Hotel which is right down town Frederiksted. The prices are reasonable and I believe that if you stay a 6 nights, your 7 night is free, but you gotta check on that one. Sandcastles is next door to Cottages by the Sea, but be aware that their rates are much higher and the rooms don’t have kitchens.

Well, if you have made it to this website, you are probably toying with the idea of whether or not you can make it to our wedding.
